The Current Landscape of Undergraduate Research Activity in the Medical School,
and a Look to the Future

The presentation by the Dundee Research and Academic Medicine Society (DRAMS) will report their findings of undergraduate research activity and the challenges that students interested in research face. The Dundee Research and Academic Medicine Society is a student-led society within the School of Medicine at the University of Dundee. DRAMS’ main aim is to promote research and academic medicine within the medical school, and to provide medical students with opportunities in research.

In this session, DRAMS will also be officially launching their new website, and introducing academic activities planned for the year!

Prof Rory McCrimmon

Dean of School of Medicine, University of Dundee
Professor of Experimental Diabetes and Metabolism

Rory McCrimmon is a Professor of Experimental Diabetes and Metabolism, and Dean, School of Medicine, University of Dundee. His laboratory research interests are in hypoglycaemia and in the brain regulation of glucose homeostasis in type 1 and 2 diabetes. He is actively involved in clinical trials and is Lead Clinician for the Scottish Diabetes Research Network (SDRN) and a member of the SDRN epidemiology group. Prof McCrimmon is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, was awarded the 2015 RD Lawrence Lecture by Diabetes UK, serves on Editorial Boards of Diabetologia and Diabetes, and as a panel member for Medical Research Council Population Systems Medicine Board, the International Hypoglycaemia Study Group, and a non-executive member of NHS Tayside Health Board.

Dr Anna Maria Choy

Clinical Senior Lecturer, University of Dundee
Consultant Cardiologist
DRAMS Advisor

Dr Anna Maria Choy is a senior clinical lecturer and a consultant cardiologist with interests in inherited cardiac conditions and arrhythmias. Dr Choy is the INSPIRE lead for the medical school and is also the co-director of the Dundee Clinical Academic Track (DCAT). With the help of DRAMS, Dr Choy aims to equip students with skills in research and academic medicine within the medical school.

Wan Nee Shue

President, DRAMS 20/21

Wan Nee is a 4th year medical student at the University of Dundee with a BSc (Neuroscience) and Diploma (German) from the University of Melbourne, Australia. She is very passionate about academia and hopes to use DRAMS as a platform to help engage and guide students in actively participating in research.

Benjamin Khoo Bing Jie

Benjamin is currently reading his clinical years in medicine at the University of Dundee. Having completed medical research stints in the past, Benjamin understands the importance of research and its magnitude of impact on society. Being a technology enthusiast, Benjamin is wholly committed to using technology to empower and equip medical students with skills in research and academic medicine within the medical school. One such way in doing so is through creation of the new DRAMS website being launched at this Grand Rounds Session.
